October Forum – Wednesday, October 4, at 10:00a.m. (Social Time at 9:30a.m.).

Come to the October Forum, to hear about Americans – A Major New Smithsonian Exhibition that will open this October. Cecile R. Ganteaume, associate curator at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, will talk about how this new exhibition examines the American peoples’ real relationship with American Indians.

Community Outreach

October food donations at the Forum will benefit the Western Fairfax Christian Ministries (WFCM) Food Pantry in Chantilly, VA.

The food pantry is especially in need of individual sized fruit juice, canned fruit, canned tomatoes, sugar, canned vegetables (excluding green beans and corn), flour, cooking oil, pancake mix/syrup, pasta, canned spinach or collards. Also appreciated (because not covered by food stamps) are body wash, deodorant, toothpaste, and shampoo.

Mariann Horejsi will deliver the food donations this month. Thank you Mariann for volunteering!

New Parking Procedures at NOVA

By now you may have learned that there are new Parking Garage Procedures at NOVA. The attached newsletter gives great detail on what to do and how to allow for extra time to get to your class as we all learn this new system. We thank you for your patience as this was a NOVA facilities directive that we must follow.

September Forum – Wednesday, September 6, at 10:00a.m. (Social Time at 9:30a.m.).

Come to the September Forum, the first one after our summer break, to hear how George Washington got along with Native Americans during the American Revolution. Guest speaker Richard Harless, an adjunct professor in the history department at NOVA/Annandale, will uncover certain aspects of George Washington that have never been told.

Information Fair – Starts at 9:00 a.m.!

Many of our Special Interest Groups (SIGs) and Committees will have displays at our Information Fair, which will be held in the Seminar Rooms, to the right of the Forum. This is your chance to chat with Committee heads and SIG leaders to ask questions about the variety of organizations and how you can become more involved. Please stop by!

Children’s Book Collection

There will be a book collection at the September Forum. Donations needed are new hardback or paperback books for children from Kindergarten through 5th grade. Thank you in advance for any donation offered.

The Trip Committee Survey – Your Opinion Matters

Don’t forget to fill out the Trip Committee Survey in the September Newsletter and bring it to the Forum! The Trip Committee wants to gather the interest level on various trips suggested for the coming year. Blank forms will be there to fill out if needed.

Community Outreach

September food donations at the Forum will benefit the food pantry operated by The Episcopal Church of the Resurrection in Alexandria.

Specific needs are cans of tuna, collard greens, beets, Morning Glory veggies, sliced pineapples, crackers, cereal (low in sugar), dried red beans, pasta (no mac and cheese), raisins, nuts, small or medium bags of brown rice, granola and fruit bars, instant coffee, snack food, Kotex pads and Poise pads or equivalent, and deodorant. Food with “no added salt” would be appreciated. Also, please avoid donating food in glass containers because of the possibility of breakage.Of course, any non-perishable food is always welcome!

Bea Taylor and Louise Bennettwill deliver your donations this month. Thank you Bea and Louise for volunteering!

Fall Course Registrations

The registration process is complete, and we have mailed out the confirmations. Remember to contact the course coordinator if you can’t attend a course for which your registered.

Subject: LLI Children's Book Collection at the September Forum

Last December at the Holiday Luncheon, we introduced a new LLI children's book donation program benefiting The Reading Connection in Arlington. It was very successful, and we planned to expand on it this year, but wanted to move the collection of books to earlier in the year. Thus, we scheduled the September Forum as our book collection date, and that announcement will be in the September newsletter coming to you next week.

Unfortunately, after 28 years of service, The Reading Connection is closing its doors, but they recommended two excellent programs, so our children's book collection is still on! The new recipients will be: AHC Inc. (founded in 1975 as the Arlington Housing Corporation), which is a non-profit that provides quality housing for low income families, plus onsite after-school programs and tutoring at community centers located within the apartment complexes. They serve approximately 100 children in grades K to 5.
The Ruby Tucker Family Center (opened in 2009), which is primarily funded by the Alexandria Redevelopment Housing Authority. It is located in Hopkins-Tancil Court, a project-based Section Eight development that is home to families fighting their way out of poverty. Its programs serve about 50 African American and Latino children, from pre-K to grade 5.
If you have not already purchased books, but plan to do so, here are some do's and don'ts.
Buy any NEW hardcover or paperback books appropriate for ages 4 -- 11 (some with an African American or Latino theme would be greatly appreciated)
